Keeping Safe - Going to School and Coming Home from School

10th Nov 2020

10th November 2020

Dear Parent,

As we move into the darker Winter mornings and afternoons, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of keeping your child/children safe on their way to and from school.

Walking

  • Please remember to always wear something bright when your child is walking to and from school. All children were provided with a high vis vest at the beginning of Term 1.
  • Always cross the road at a safe place.
  • Always stop at the kerb or crossing and make sure it is safe to cross.
  • Hold your grown-up’s hand near traffic.
  • Avoid crossing between parked cars.

Cycling/Scoot

  • Remember to always wear bright clothing when you are on your bike/scooter in poor light or darkness.
  • Remember to turn on your front and back lights when it is dark to make sure you are visible to drivers.
  • Please ensure that you are wearing a cycle helmet to protect you if you fall off your bike/scooter.
  • Cycle/Scoot sensibly and obey the rules of the road.

Travelling by Car

  • Ask the adult taking you to school to park a few minutes away from the school when dropping you off and walk with you the last bit to avoid congestion around the school gates.
  • Remember to wear something bright so all drivers can see you when you are walking after getting out of the car.
  • Always wear your seatbelt and sit in the appropriate car seat for your age and height.

Where possible, it is advised that an adult should accompany their child/children to and from school.

In addition, as more children take the option of waking home please remind children of ‘stranger danger’ and how to keep themselves safe if they are out alone. Some information is available on the NSPCC website by following the ‘Help and Advice for Parents’ links.

Additionally, please read the following pieces of information with your child,

  • NEVER go anywhere with someone that you do not know or do not trust. Stay well away from strangers’ cars.
  • NEVER take anything from a stranger even if it is something personal that belongs to you.
  • NEVER talk to strangers even if they know your name. If they try to start a conversation with you, it is ok to ignore them and not look at them. Keep walking away and find a safe and trusted adult.
  • NEVER provide a stranger with information about you or your family, including your name, address or school.
  • ALWAYS stay with a friend, family member or group of friends if possible.
  • ALWAYS follow the rules and go straight home or to school. You should not go anywhere that you are not supposed to go or do not have permission to go.

Many thanks for your continued support in helping us to keep children safe on their journeys to and from school.

Yours truly,

Mr Cheevers
