Martin Luther King Day

12th Jan 2024

Today’s assembly started with learning about Martin Luther King, a Christian pastor who lived in America and devoted his life to ensuring that all Americans had the same rights regardless of their race. He believed that God created all men and women equally. All Americans will have a national holiday on 15th January otherwise known as Martin Luther King Day.

We talked about articles one and two from the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child and how all children should be protected against all forms of discrimination.  We are to love our neighbour regardless of who they are or look, just as God loves us.

The children learned a verse from the Bible, ‘the first shall be last and the last shall be first’ (Mark 31:10) and the meaning behind this passage. Martin Luther King worked tirelessly for others putting the needs of others before himself and we too are to serve others just as Jesus spent his life and gave the ultimate sacrifice for us by dying for our sins.

We then looked at the story of the ‘Good Samaritan’ and why people walked past the injured man without helping him except for the ‘Good Samaritan’, who immediately stopped to help. God instructs us to be like the ‘Good Samaritan’ and to do the same to others regardless of race, culture, religion and language etc.
Assembly concluded with singing, ‘What a mighty God we serve’, ‘I have decided to follow Jesus’ and ‘I will follow Jesus’.
