Problem Solving in Numeracy by P1 & P2

28th Feb 2017

P1&2 were faced with a problem to solve.  P6&7 wanted to make pancakes for everyone in school.  What bowl should they use and why?  They had 4 bowls to consider (see photographs).  We got together to discuss what we thought first. Some thought the white bowl would be best because it looked like it would hold more.  This would mean P6&7 could make more pancakes!  Others thought the red bowl would hold more because it looked bigger.  I said P6&7 needed to know for sure.  Lots of discussion followed as to how we could find out for sure.  Finally it was agreed that we fill each bowl with water using the same sized cup to find out how much each can hold.  The children got into groups and couldn't wait to get started ... so much so that some of them forgot to count and had to start again - a valuable learning experience!  The plenary session involved discussing our findings and ordering the containers.  Why don't you ask your child what they learned?
